Stay healthy around the clock

Categories: Fitness, Mind and body

Did you remember to switch your hormones on this morning? No? Good job your body clock is busily working overtime, keeping everything functioning like, um, clockwork. Controlled by daylight, your circadian rhythms work on a cycle of just over 24 hours, regulating everything from hormones to blood pressure, and even your temperature.

So don't upset the rhythm! Choosing the right time of day could be the key to staying healthy.

7am - try for a baby. Testosterone levels are highest for men and women, so libido peaks, while studies have found that women often begin ovulating around midnight, so the egg is in the fallopian tubes now.

8am - watch out for a nosebleed. Blood pressure rises rapidly now, which makes this more likely.

3pm - go to the dentist. Endorphin levels, the body's natural painkiller, are highest now so you can tolerate more pain than the rest of the day. The exceptions are the days before and at the beginning of your period.

5pm - exercise! You're strongest and most flexible now as your muscles are warm, body temperature is highest and your lung function peaks.

7pm - take your supplements. Munching them with your main meal means they'll be broken down more efficiently, as there's more gastric enzymes produced in the stomach. And unlike breakfast, there's less risk of coffee or tea affecting absorption.

8.30pm - have a drink! Your liver enzymes have been increasing since 8pm, and won't drop again until around 10pm, so they'll break down alcohol most effectively. Cheers!

11pm - have an antihistamine. Allergy sufferers are most sensitive late at night, especially when it comes to dust allergies and hayfever. And if you have asthma, you're 300 times more likely to have a severe attack during the night as adrenaline and anti-inflammatory hormones are lowest.
