Is a trip to the cinema making you fat?

Categories: Healthy eating, Breaking health news

Are you looking forward to your next trip to the movies? Imagine it - the dark auditorium, a comfy seat, the bright screen and a gigantic bucket of popcorn or a big bag of sweets.

Going to the cinema is often something we do when we want to treat ourselves and switch off for a couple of hours. You may associate that downtime with free reign to enjoy eating your favourite junk food or feel like a visit just isn't the same without salty or sugary snacks.

The Foods Standards Agency said recently that it was worried about the size of containers for food sold in cinemas and wants customers to be told how many calories food on sale contains.

According to The Times, a large (375g) bucket of sugared popcorn contains around 1,800 calories.

A spokesperson for the FSA explained: "The food on offer at cinemas is food that is often high in fat, sugar and salt. It is also served in pretty large portions and people don't have a choice to choose something smaller, for example the smallest soft drink on offer can be as big as a pint and popcorn tends to come in large buckets."

"The FSA thinks it's a good idea that people should have more choice. If they want to order a smaller popcorn box or soft drink then it should be available."

If you're on a quest to cut out sugary or salty snacks from your diet, try ordering a coffee or tea to take in with you. You could also bring along some mixed nuts and raisins to snack on while you watch the film.
