Natalie Imbruglia's Marathon tips

Celebrity bodies, Motivation

I've only just got back to London from several months in Australia, where I had the most incredible time running up and down the beach on the Goldcoast in Queensland.

It's my first marathon and I'm running with Richard Branson for Virgin Unite youth charities and the End Fistula campaign - that's really close to my heart.

I've always worked out up to four times a week, but I'm now in supergirl mode, and I don't reckon I've ever been fitter or been able to eat more!

I ran 16 miles straight last weekend. It took a lot longer than expected because I had some knee trouble, but I've changed my shoes and sorted that out now. Completing that did wonders for my confidence.

The hardest thing about running in London is the cars and bikes. I almost got knocked over last week! You can get into such a trance running that you can forget to watch out for what's going on around you!

I've been running in the evenings because I've been training with Holly and Sam Branson, and the rest of my friends in the Caterpillar team - although we have some friendly competition going, we're happy to train together.

And they're so much faster than me, I'm hardly a threat! I hope they manage all 32 of them being tied together.

Persian chicken with saffron rice pilaf

Healthy eating

This is a great dish, inspired by the simple, clean flavours of Persia. It is really good for pitta imbalances as saffron reduces pitta in the body and dates are great for cleansing the blood (a prolonged imbalanced pitta can lead to blood disorders).

Recipe taken from Anjum Anand's "Eat right for your body type"

This dish is also good for vata as the saffron is nourishing and the rice easy to digest (you can add a little more ghee or butter).

It contains a little too much of the 'sweet' taste (chicken and rice are both 'sweet') for kapha, but you can serve small portions with lots of vegetables on the side and use chicken breast instead of thighs.

Serves 2
350g poussin (baby chicken), skinned and jointed (ask your butcher) or
2 large chicken thighs, skinned and 3 slashes cut on the surface

Marinade
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tbsp chicken stock (optional but improves flavour, or use water)
1⁄4 medium onion, peeled and chopped (use remainder in the rice)
1 tbsp lemon juice
3⁄4 tsp ground cumin
1⁄2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tbsp fresh mint leaves

Saf fron rice
100g basmati rice
Good pinch of saffron
1 tbsp ghee or vegetable oil
1 bay leaf
1 large cinnamon stick
4 green cardamom pods
1⁄2 medium onion, peeled and sliced
1 clove of garlic, peeled and finely chopped
240ml water or chicken stock (more flavour)
Salt
2 dates, seeds removed and sliced or chopped to large pieces

Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF) gas mark 4.

Spicy Sweetcorn Soup

Healthy eating

This is a wonderful soup which is creamy and delicious. This soup is good for all the doshas (although pitta should leave out the chilli). The garnish is optional but does add some great texture to the soup.

Recipe taken from Anjum Anand's "Eat right for your body type"

Serves 4
1⁄2 tbsp ghee or 1 tbsp vegetable oil
11⁄2 medium onions, peeled and sliced
16g fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
4 cloves of garlic, peeled and roughly chopped
1–2 green chillies, pierced with the tip of a knife
1⁄2 tsp ground turmeric
11⁄2 tsp ground cumin
11⁄2 tsp ground coriander
1⁄2 –1 tsp garam masala
Salt
4 sweetcorn cobs, corn cut off with a serrated knife (one handful reserve for garnish)
Handful of fresh coriander, chopped,

Lava shell massage

Reviews & products, Mind and body

I've never had a hot stone massage but I was reliably told by my beauty therapist that one done with Lava shells is even better, which apparently is no mean feat. Unlike hot stones, Lava Shells are powered by something called LavaGel and needs no external equipment, electricity or batteries. So far, so green.

This LavaGel is a clever little blend of self-heating natural minerals and ingredients, including algae and dried sea kelp and when combined with salt water generates its own delicious controlled heat. The science bit baffled me slightly but I do like to try and expand my mind when i've got an hour of relaxation to contend with.

If you've ever had a Swedish massage then you'll absolutely love this treatment because the same basic techniques are used. The therapist uses the shells to really work deep into your muscles and all pain, tension and thoughts about the current economic crisis are melted away by the heat. This treatment is the best of both worlds, you are warmed through to the core, which is exactly what you need in nasty November and you're left so relaxed that I had to have a little sit down for 10 minutes just to gather myself.

I had my treatment at the Harbour Club Chelsea Spa in London, but there are loads of salons across the UK that offer it.

In fact, if you're ever invited by Richard Branson to Necker Island, then please ask him for a Lava shells session as the beauticians there are fully trained. If it's good enough for Richard, then it should be good enough for you!

Ark's Skin Response Facial

Reviews & products, Mind and body

My glorious skin response facial at Ark began with a skincare consultation where I had to answer a simple questionnaire on my daily skincare routine. I was ready to lie.

I was ready to explain how I had never seen a cigarette in my life, I'd never drunk a skinfull of red wine and as a result i'd never ever fallen asleep with a full face of glittery make-up on. I was quite prepared to be told that at the age of 29 I had a face like Brigitte Bardot (as she is today, not the young sex kitten variety).

I was then taken through to have my facial, the beginning of what would be the most relaxing 75 minutes of my life. My pores were scrutinised under a bright light (which was terrifying) and I was told, despite a little skin damage (thanks to the factor 6 suntan lotion I swear by) and some redness caused by capillary damage (that will be the red wine then), that I have very good skin. The likeness to Ms. Bardot ends here.

The treatment and the products used were tailored to my skin type and the philosophy behind Ark's skincare range is a simple one, products are not categorised by skin type but divided into three age-related categories: age prepare (Teens to mid 30s), age maintain (Mid 30s to 50) and age repair (50s and beyond)

My face was gently steamed, scrubbed, massaged and masqued. This is exactly what you would expect from a fantastic standard facial but what really strikes me about the Ark treatments are all the wonderful little extras that you wouldn't expect. Whilst my face was steaming my feet were massaged, the face massage extended into a neck, chest and shoulder treatment and whilst I was absorbing my masque I was treated to a lovely long head massage.

The treatment costs £70 for 1 hour 15 minutes, and is worth every single penny. The experience was amazing and my skin was deliciously soft and positively glowed for days afterwards. I treated myself to a skin vitality moisturiser and de-stress skin response serum in order to combat those damaged capillaries. Well, it was either that or give up the red wine.
